The defense of the divinity of the Holy Spirit in the fifth Theological oration of Gregory of Nazianzus

Abstract
This article aims to investigate the central elements of Gregory of Nazianzus' argument in favor of the divinity of the Holy Spirit in his fifth theological oration, highlighting its dependencies and reverberations in Constantinople I (380). Our analysis will reveal both the closeness of Gregory's thinking to Athanasius of Alexandria and Basil of Caesarea, as well as its originality. Furthermore, we will show that by combating the radical Arians and the Pneumatomachians, Nazianzen will bequeath to theology and dogma the “physiognomy” of the Holy Spirit as the one who proceeds from the Father and deifies the faithful, and who is therefore God and consubstantial with the Father and the Son. The divinity of the Spirit triumphed at Constantinople I thanks to seasoned theologians such as Gregory, although the formula adopted was not the one he defended.
