Abstract

Next May 2025 will mark the beginning of Nicaea Council, the Catholic Church’s first ecumenical council, after 17 centuries. Its Symbol, as complemented in the Constantinople I Council, is still official in ecclesiastical liturgy. To commemorate this event, it is worthwhile analyzing with precision its original meaning, in its confrontation with the Arian heresy, and the consequences this debate might have had, to highlight any distortion that might have occurred in latter times. It is also important to analyze a side-effect of the struggle against the heresy ―a kind of ensuing tsunami― that is, an ultra-orthodox reaction that might have occurred in the struggle to define orthodoxy.
