Talking and remaining silent about God

Abstract

The relationship between word and silence is at the basis of any human communication. Theology, as a word about God, needs word and silence in a special way. Faced with the blindness of a reason that is too short, insensitive to the reality of God, theology must speak of God on the basis of divine revelation that manifests itself as a word, but also as silence. Theology must refer to God strictly as God, not simply as a more perfect and elevated being. Positive affirmation about God must be accompanied by denial in order to free our way of knowing Him from all contamination of the non-divine. Positive theology and negative theology are complementary approaches in theological discourse.
