Abstract

The article presents the Holy Spirit as the vital principle of the Christian, according to Augustinian thought. For this purpose, the doctrine of St. Augustine on the Holy Spirit as Giver of Life in the first writings of St. Augustine is presented. Subsequently, a brief review is made of the sermons preached by St. Augustine, both on the vigil of the feast of Pentecost, as well as on the day of the feast itself, in order to look for traces and vestiges of the theme of the Spirit as the life-giving principle of the believers. The spiritual consequences of the fact that the Holy Spirit is the life-giving principle of believers are also discussed, first of all by presenting the demands of conversion involved in receiving the Spirit. Subsequently, the ways in which the Holy Spirit makes his life-giving indwelling in believers as his temples are identified, concluding with a brief reflection on the sin against the Holy Spirit according to Augustinian thought.
