Pneumatological aspects of Augustinian preaching on the eve of Pentecost

Abstract
The study analyzes the pneumatological aspects present in the sermons that Saint Augustine preached during the Vigil of Pentecost, focusing on the theological understanding of the Holy Spirit within its liturgical and pastoral context. In the first three sermons (29, 29A, and 29B), the central theme revolves around the double dimension of confessio: confessio peccatorum, as the penitential acknowledgment of sin, and confessio laudis, as praise to the good and merciful God. Although references to the Holy Spirit are scarce, Augustine presents Him as the inspirer of Scripture and of liturgical praise. Sermon 266, by contrast, develops a more explicit pneumatology, emphasizing the gratuity and freedom of the Spirit in His sanctifying action, independent of the minister’s worthiness—thus refuting the Donatist position. In this way, Augustine proposes a theology of the Spirit centered on divine initiative and on the Spirit’s unifying role within the Church.
