Galatians: Ternary Structure and Trinitarian Theology. A Reading Proposal

Main Article Content

Jacinto Núñez Regodón

Abstract

Traditionally, the study of the Letter to the Galatians has been based on two principles: the virtually unanimous belief that the central core is the category of justification, as well as the tripartite structure of the writing: history (chapters 1-2), theology (3 and 4), and morals (5-6). This paper warns of the danger of reductionism of the very idea of justification and proposes to relate it to other no less important thematic nuclei. On the other hand, it tries to show that the tripartite structure is articulated around the categories of gospel, faith-justification and freedom. Finally, the author proposes that the first part has as its protagonist God the Father (“He was pleased to reveal to me that Jesus is His Son”), the second Christ (“we have believed in Jesus Christ”) and the third the Spirit (“walk according to the Spirit”). In this way, a very fundamental relationship between the ternary structure and the living consciousness of the Trinitarian faith is defended.
