«How Moses saw the Lord». Hope and visio dei in Saint Agustin

Abstract
In this study, we will focus on a relevant aspect of the Hope, considered as the introductory context for understanding the uisio Dei in Saint Augustine. Some general aspects of the Hope will be considered to start our itinerary. Then, in the following pages, we will considerer especially the De Trinitate based on his inquiry about the uisio Dei in the theophanies of the Old Testament. In particular, we will pay attention to Moses in Ex 33,7-23, about whom Augustine warns: «He knew very well what he saw bodily, and that is why he longed for the true spiritual contemplation of God» (trin. II,16,27). We will try to elucidate the meaning of this expression, interpreting it in the context of the Work and in connection with other texts, such as the Epistle 147.
