Intuitu meritorum Christi. The soteriology of the ‘late’ Karl Rahner
Main Article Content
Abstract
In some writings of the “last Rahner” we have access to the proposal of a systematic Soteriology in which many of the assumptions that had been developing throughout the theological work of our author are developed in a more articulated way. Rahner’s soteriological reflection aims to show contemporary man that Christ continues to be the absolute bearer of salvation (der absolute Heilbringer) and that what happened in him and through him must be received as a free offer of God’s free self-communication for all men. In the following pages we will try to present some of the great themes or fundamental nuclei of Rahnerian soteriology: the unique mediation of Jesus Christ, the universality of salvation, the Christian understanding of redemption and the meaning ofthe terms “reconciliation” and “substitution”. Without hiding its limits, the soteriology of the “last” Karl Rahner appears before us as a task still pending to be deployed in all its possibilities and that cannot be ignored by current theology.
